Christian Prayer – God’s Sacred History with Me

In the "New Covenant" made by our Creator God with humanity, as reported in Jeremiah 31:31-34, every human being can know God from within - because the Holy Spirit is revealing our Creator to all who are willing to know the Lord and trust in Him. We can still help each other along the way; so may you be pleased to find here a variety of helps to the life of faith in God through Jesus Christ. G.S.

Christian Prayer – God’s Sacred History with Me

Prayer is simply visiting with God – the Creator of the Universe – who is always present. Jesus revealed God to be a Trinity, a Community of Divine Persons: the Father, the Son – who also became human through Mary and is known as Jesus – and the Holy Spirit. Here are the simplest steps for visiting with God in prayer.

PRELIMINARY NOTES FOR ALL WHO PRAY

1.      BUSY PRAYER IN THE DUTY OF THE MOMENT: Our life is complex in many dimensions. We can pray – visit with God – anywhere, anytime. CAUTION: Pay attention in the “front” of your mind to what you are doing to avoid injury… let prayer “happen” on the “back burner” ….

2.      PRAYER OF SILENCE: Friends of God find Him in silence, not the absence of noise, but in the silence, we learn to keep within ourselves, quieting our mind, heart, and spirit, like a baby in the parent’s lap.

3.      CONTEMPLATIVE NATURE WALK: Taking a leisurely walk in nature, without any errand to run, just for the sheer pleasure, and without rushing - can open us up to a moment of "awe" and "wonder", lift our spirit "into God" or open us to "sense" the "living presence of God" within us. Silence helps us "savor it".

4.      PONDERING THE WORD OF GOD: "Listen" to God as you slowly read Sacred Scripture, paying attention to the Lord, and personally "respond" to Him. First, ask the Holy Spirit to help. Later, thank Him.

5.      OTHER FORMS OF PRAYER: You can pray with Scripture, the Word of God in the Bible; or with the Mysteries of the Rosary; or at Holy Mass; or TO God WITH the saints to help you pray; or written prayers.

6.      PRAYER TIME & PLACE: Choose a time and place to visit with God by setting aside any other activity.

7.      IT IS THE HOLY SPIRIT WHO REALLY DOES THE PRAYING WITHIN US: Let the Holy Spirit carry you in the praying, especially when you are doing something else. At all times the Holy Spirit can give us the grace to relax and the Holy Spirit teaches us how to allow the prayer to “echo” within our spirit.

ACTUALLY PRAYING

8.      “BE NOT AFRAID!” God, revealed by Jesus of Nazareth, is a “community” of Divine Persons, the Father, his Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit; yet a single Divine Being. God will ever remain mysterious.

9.      DECIDE: Simply decide to pray, to take some time to personally visit with God.

10.  ASK: Ask the Holy Spirit to be with you and help you to pray, to visit with the Holy Trinity.

11.  SELECT: Choose the "prayer method" or "avenue" or occasion you want.

12.  ENTER INTO YOUR PRAYER METHOD: In silent prayer relax and rest in the Lord.
OR Select a
Scripture text and read slowly, “ponder” the words, let them touch your mind, heart, spirit.
OR Pray the
Rosary with Mary while meditating on the Mysteries of Jesus in the Holy Rosary. OR…

13.  “WORRY NOT – ENJOY!” You may notice worries, ideas, emotions, resolutions, anxieties, “to do” lists – just let them drop, and turn your attention back to your prayer… you can pick them up again later. Enjoy the presence and the love of God the Father, his Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.

14.  AT THE END GIVE THANKS: Say “Thank You, Lord… or Father… or Jesus… or Holy Spirit.”

Spiritual Prayer Exercise – Letting God Show You His Presence and Care throughout Your Whole Life

A good, holy, elderly priest – Fr. Walter Lallemand, a war veteran who as a recovering alcoholic was a man familiar with suffering – in February 1977 gave us young adults a prayer exercise to see our life like that of the people of Israel in the Bible. Like theirs, each journey is a sacred history of God’s grace. This is an invitation to reflect with your memory in God’s presence. Ask God to help you remember – whether you realized it at the time or not – when God was there for you and with you. Sharper memories may present themselves first – times when you were loved and cared for – or moments of pain, illness, discomfort, or sadness. God can impress his Love on us powerfully in times of trial. As this relies on our ability to remember, it is an exercise that you can return to and add onto several times over the years. Each experience we remember becomes a treasure enriching and enlightening our life and relationship with God and others. Each box helps organize thoughts / memories and reflect on them. Here are presented to you a sample schematic but you will probably need more space; so, feel free to use more paper. May the Holy Trinity reveal to you, bless your sacred history, and lead you on.

God’s Sacred History with Me

Prayer to the Holy Spirit: "Come, Holy Spirit, Advocate and Guide, You who are the "Lord and Giver of Life", and enlighten my mind, heart, body, and soul to recall all those moments when You and the Father and the Lord Jesus "touched" my life. Grant me insight and gratitude for all your graces and blessings, both the "pleasant" ones and those that are "less pleasant" and more like "disciplinary moments", both the consolations and the desolation moments of life. Help me see the harmony and purpose of all things in life. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to You, Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen."

+ * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * +

Make a table with columns for yourself in order to catch the details of your experiences of God, those moments when you "felt" touched or blessed or healed or guided or loved by God... etc.

On the left will be column #0 which will list the age you were, or the date or year when the "experience of God" happened.

Moving towards the right, more columns could allow you to catch the details of each of those experiences as follows or with variations along these lines:

  1. What happened, or what would you call this experience?
  2. What was it about, what is the "core" memory?
  3. How did you feel during this experience? OR How did you feel later?
  4. What other person might have played a role?
  5. How did this affect you at the time?
  6. What lingering effects have remained with you?
  7. How was God "with you"?
  8. How do you feel now?

This is a spiritual exercise to which you can return again and again, pondering the ways of the Lord in your life, and letting the Holy Spirit teach you to recognize the many ways in which the Most Holy Trinity is present, acting, and blessing you in your life.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit: "Thank You, Holy Spirit, for you light and guidance, for your help and strength, for your encouragement and consolation, but most of all for your love. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to You, Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen."

from

Father Gilles Surprenant,

priest of Montreal

Animator of the Workshop / Seminar

“Introduction to Prayer”

“God”, “prayer”, “spirituality”, and how these connect with “marriage”, “couple relationship”, “married life”, “family life”, “love”, and other dimensions of life are pertinent topics for you as you plan and prepare for the rest of your lives.

The presenters in this Marriage Preparation Program are generally couples but there are also two priests, and we all mention prayer and the importance of prayer in marriages that can be qualified as “successful”, “fruitful”, or “happy”. This is why we offer you this Workshop / Seminar “Introduction to Prayer”.

It is useful to “know” more about all those topics listed above, but the “fast track” to really making progress in those dimensions of human life is that of “experience” or “practice”. In other words, there is no better way to learn or make progress or have satisfaction than by DOING IT. So, we invite you to come prepared to participate in this workshop / seminar, and the more you participate, the more satisfaction you are likely to experience.

“Cacophony of voices” – this just means a jumble of voices, which is what happens when a bunch of people pray out loud together. The goal is not to sound perfectly in sync as in opera or a choir singing or a symphony performing. The goal is to move ahead together. It is a little more difficult online than in person, but just focus on the voice next to you at home, and do your best to “blend in” with the others online. We focus our attention on opening our spirit to God, and the other voices simply help us stay “on the path”. They help us move ahead.

“Awkward silences” – as we enter into various prayer exercises, there will be silences because silence is and has always been an important “medium” or “environment” in which to “encounter” God. If you are “plugged in” with technological devices much of the day, either for work or pleasure, you may find the silences awkward. Let the silence “befriend” you and just “go with it” … “go with the flow” … and in time you will find great peace and comfort.

The “quality of the presentations and materials” – we are all embedded in “Hollywood” culture, and we don’t realize how easily we go into “entertainment mode”. While it is fun to be dazzled by highly dynamic and innovative presentations, most of us presenters are really just ordinary folks who happen to love engaged couples and your wonderful life projects.

We are highly motivated to help you prepare well for the rest of your lives by picking up now some useful tools, practices, attitudes, and habits that will help you to grow into the man / husband / father and woman / wife / mother you deeply desire to be.

So, we ask you to soften your “critical senses and minds” and focus rather on what you can draw from what is being presented, and how you might incorporate that today into your life personally and into your relationship as a couple. With this approach, you will derive far more benefit and satisfaction during this program of formation, but more importantly, you are far more likely to build together a successful, fruitful, and happy marriage and family.

Let us pray for one another as we share this little bit of journey together.

See you soon!

Script for our Seminar on - God - Prayer - Life - Marriage - Family - April 10th, 2021

In the "New Covenant" made by our Creator God with humanity, as reported in Jeremiah 31:31-34, every human being can know God from within - because the Holy Spirit is revealing our Creator to all who are willing to know the Lord and trust in Him. However, because of our human condition, many obstacles within us can block our ability to perceive the presence and guidance of the Holy Spirit. We can also help each other along the way; so may you be pleased to find here a variety of helps to the life of faith in God through Jesus Christ. G.S.

Caution: Usefulness of videos and images

There exists a great variety of videos, audio podcasts, images, icons, statues, and other aids to prayer. These only serve to warm up, but the goal of prayer is to pray. Focusing only on material aids is like walking around the pool and maybe putting a toe in, but not actually getting into the pool and getting wet. We need to get wet with God. The gold is you and who you are on the inside. I invite you to join me with this focus on yourself on the inside, which is why I won't be using any slides or videos as such, other than my notes on this page.

The 2 SCENARIOS ??                      (2 minutes)

? SCENARIO # 1 - Absence of God = Without God we run the Risk of power politics in love, marriage & family

entrenching in one's fortress VS one's spouse as an adversary or competitor

?? SCENARIO # 2 - Presence of God = With God we can Plug into Him as the Source of love, marriage & family

recognizing one another's dignity as coming from God = we can relax and respect one another as companions on our life journey....

👍 We are opting here for Scenario # 2 - We make an act of faith that God is present. We'll begin with a practical experience of prayer. Don't be afraid, it will be non-intrusive. Naturally, you are always free to conduct your own interior prayer.

A LITTLE BACKGROUND TO PRAYER

The Dimensions of Prayer... & Obstacles....      (6 minutes)

Prayer is communication with God. Now, God has all the time in the universe. He is not in a hurry. He cannot visit with me if I am full of noise, when I go around in circles and obsess over my thoughts and feelings, when I let my anxiety about many things keep me captive, if I am full of my importance and what I want, or if I carry a bias of contempt for God or his Church, or whenever I am impatient and want results now. These are only some of the obstacles that get in the way of intimacy with God. All these dispositions of temperament and mood are not bad or evil; actually they are launchpads for prayer. Here are some helpful attitudes to keep in mind. God is always glad to help us practice these.

SILENCE - If we remain plugged into devices all day long we cannot experience silence which we need to notice God "present" and "moving" within us.

PEACE - If we obsess over our thoughts & feelings we end up on a merry-go-round and we risk talking only to ourselves, oblivious to others as well as to God.

HUMILITY - As long as I want MY WAY, and want it NOW, I close the door to others as well as to God, but He respects my freedom, lets me follow my own path, and waits for me to be open and ready.

GRATITUDE - I can let go of any contempt I may feel for God or his Church by calling to mind the many reasons I actually have for being grateful for my life, for everyone, and for everything in my life. Even my trials and challenges provoke growth and resilience. It does me good to recognize God as the Source of all good.

PATIENCE - To encounter God, who remains mysterious, I must be patient, that is, I must seek Him, wait for Him, and live in hopeful anticipation of "the God who comes".

👇 LET US NOW APPLY THESE ATTITUDES 👇

INSTRUCTIONS

I'll read the Antiphon and I invite all of you to repeat it. Then one by one we can participate by slowly reading one of the verses. As we wait for someone to read, let the silence be a gift, an opportunity to relax in the presence of God, and to let the words penetrate us with their meaning. We do our little part, and God does his part deep within each of us, bringing his peace.

👉 PRAYER EXERCISE # 1 - Psalm 95 (Lent) 👈

- - - - - -

Antiphon: Come, let us worship Christ the Lord,
who for our sake endured temptation and suffering.

- - - - - -

Come, let us sing to the Lord and shout with joy to the Rock who saves us. Let us approach him with praise and thanksgiving and sing joyful songs to the Lord.

- - - - - -

The Lord is God, the mighty God, the great king over all the gods.
He holds in his hands the depths of the earth and the highest mountains as well.
He made the sea; it belongs to him, the dry land, too, for it was formed by his hands.

- - - - - -

Come, then, let us bow down and worship,
bending the knee before the Lord, our maker,
For he is our God and we are his people, the flock he shepherds.

- - - - - -

Today, listen to the voice of the Lord: Do not grow stubborn,
as your fathers did in the wilderness,
when at Meriba and Massah they challenged me and provoked me,
although they had seen all of my works.

- - - - - -

Forty years I endured that generation.
I said, “They are a people whose hearts go astray and they do not know my ways.
So I swore in my anger, “They shall not enter into my rest.”

- - - - - -

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever, Amen

- - - - - -

Antiphon: Come, let us worship Christ the Lord,
who for our sake endured temptation and suffering.

👉 PRAYER EXERCISE # 2 - SILENCE 👈

A HUMBLE GIFT OF SILENCE
(2 minute instruction + 4 minutes of silence)

Silence is a good companion to reading lines from the Word of God, the Bible. Here are some simple instructions for a few minutes of silent prayer together. I invite you to give yourself permission to sit for a few minutes, relax, and just breathe. I'll let you know when the time is up after a few minutes; so don't worry about the duration.

Human beings everywhere pray in silence – it's the most natural thing to do. You can close your eyes now or at any point during these brief instructions and relax.

1)      If you are already familiar with God or Jesus; have a good visit with Him.

If you are not on familiar terms with God or Jesus, let this be an introduction. He desires a personal relationship with you: He always respects your free will.

2)      You get to decide how open you want to be with the Creator & Saviour….

3)      Sit comfortably, hands resting on knees…  Back & head straight… & relax…

4)      Be still… feel free to adjust your body to relax, be comfortable & alert…

5)      In the silence, notice your interior landscape like a drive in the country…

6)      If all is quiet and peaceful, lovely… focus on a kind image of God or Jesus

7)
If all is not quiet, notice the noise, words, images… this is part of you...
just let it go... let yourself enjoy the ride; focus on a kind image of God or Jesus

8)      "God our Creator... here we are... how awesome is your Creation in which we live and move and have our being... thank You. We offer You now a few moments in silence... You are welcome to visit with us within in our spirits."

9)      Now you’ll have a few minutes of silence….

SETTING THE STAGE

FOCUS:  God is all about relationship and personal communication. The whole Bible shows God inviting people to a personal relationship. God reveals Himself in more dramatic ways to people to whom He wants to give a special mission. For most of us God chooses to reveal Himself more gently, in the depths of our being.

1)      Have you given any thought to what has been your experience of God? your experience of prayer? your experience of spiritual things?

2)      Are you familiar or comfortable with your interior life?

3)
Perhaps you’ve never really thought much about your interior life?

4)
Do you find the idea or reality of your interior life challenging or frightening?

5)
Where are you with regards to your interiority at this point in your life?

6)
Have you and your fiancé shared about your respective interior life?
