A Spark of the Divine?

At the prodding of my friends, I am writing this story.  My name is Mildred Hondorf.  I am a former elementary school music teacher from Des Moines, Iowa.  I've always supplemented my income by teaching piano lessons – something I've done for over 30 years. Over the years I found that children have many levels of musical ability.  I've never had the pleasure of having a protégé; though I have taught some talented students.

However I've also had my share of what I call "musically challenged" pupils.  One such student was Robby.  Robby was 11 years old when his mother (a single mom) dropped him off for his first piano lesson.  I prefer that students (especially boys!) begin at an earlier age, which I explained to Robby.  But Robby said that it had always been his mother's dream to hear him play the piano.  So I took him as a student.  Well, Robby began with his piano lessons and from the beginning I thought it was a hopeless endeavor.  As much as Robby tried, he lacked the sense of tone and basic rhythm needed to excel.

But he dutifully reviewed his scales and some elementary pieces that I require all my students to learn.  Over the months he tried and tried while I listened and cringed and tried to encourage him.  At the end of each weekly lesson he'd always say, "My mom's going to hear me play someday."  But it seemed hopeless.  He just did not have any inborn ability.  I only knew his mother from a distance as she dropped Robby off or waited in her aged car to pick him up. She always waved and smiled but never stopped in.

Then one day Robby stopped coming to our lessons.  I thought about calling him but assumed, because of his lack of ability, that he had decided to pursue something else.  I also was glad that he stopped coming.  He was a bad advertisement for my teaching!  Several weeks later I mailed to the students’ homes a flyer on the upcoming recital.  To my surprise Robby (who received a flyer) asked me if he could be in the recital.  I told him that the recital was for current pupils and because he had dropped out he really did not qualify.  He said that his mom had been sick and unable to take him to piano lessons but he was still practicing.  "Miss Hondorf... I've just got to play!" he insisted.  I don't know what led me to allow him to play in the recital.  Maybe it was his persistence or maybe it was something inside of me saying that it would be all right.

The night for the recital came.  The high school gymnasium was packed with parents, friends and relatives.  I put Robby up last in the program before I was to come up and thank all the students and play a finishing piece.  I thought that any damage he would do would come at the end of the program and I could always salvage his poor performance through my "curtain closer."  Well, the recital went off without a hitch.  The students had been practicing and it showed.  Then Robby came up on stage.  His clothes were wrinkled and his hair looked like he had run an eggbeater through it.  "Why didn't he dress up like the other students?" I thought."  Why didn't his mother at least make him comb his hair for this special night?"

Robby pulled out the piano bench and he began.  I was surprised when he announced that he had chosen a brief Mozart piece the children had been learning.  I was not prepared for what I heard next.  His fingers were light on the keys, they even danced nimbly on the ivories.  He went from pianissimo to fortissimo... his chords were magnificent!  Never had I heard Mozart played so well by a child his age.

After six and a half minutes he ended in a grand crescendo and everyone was on their feet in wild applause.  Overcome and in tears I ran up on stage and  put my arms around Robby in joy.  "I've never heard you play like that Robby!  How'd you do it?"  Through the microphone Robby explained: "Well Miss Hondorf... remember I told you my mom was sick? Well, actually she had cancer and passed away this morning.  And well.... she was born deaf so tonight was the first time she ever heard me play.  I wanted to make it special."

There wasn't a dry eye in the house that evening.  As the people from Social Services led Robby from the stage to be placed into foster care, I noticed that even their eyes were red and puffy and I thought to myself how much richer my life had been for taking Robby as my pupil.  No, I've never had a prodigy but that night I became a protégé... of Robby's.  He was the teacher and I was the pupil.  For it is he that taught me the meaning of perseverance and love and believing in yourself and maybe even taking a chance in someone and you don't know why.

This is a fictitious story, but the lesson is from above. Feel free to pass on this hint of the Divine and leave the world a bit warmer in the process.

SOME POINTS TO PONDER

If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are
more blessed than the million who will not survive this week.

If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness
of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation,
you are ahead of 500 million people in the world.

If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment,
arrest, torture, or death, you are more blessed than three billion
people in the world.

If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof
overhead and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75% of this world.

If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a
dish someplace, you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy.

If you hold up your head with a smile on your face and are truly
thankful, you are blessed because the majority can, but most do not.

If you can hold someone's hand, hug them or even touch them on the
shoulder, you are blessed because you can offer healing touch.

If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in
that someone was thinking of you, and you are more blessed than over
two billion people in the world that cannot read at all.

Have a good day, count your blessings, and pass this along to remind
everyone else how blessed we all are.

THE  SILENT SERMON

A member of a certain church, who previously had been attending services regularly,
stopped going. After a few weeks, the preacher decided to visit him.

It was a chilly evening. The pastor found the man at home alone, sitting before a blazing fire. Guessing the reason for his preacher's visit, the man welcomed him, led him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace and waited.

The preacher made himself at home but said nothing. In the grave silence, he contemplated the dance of the flames around the burning logs. After some minutes, the preacher took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth all alone; then he sat back in his chair, still silent.

The host watched all this in quiet contemplation. As the one lone ember's flame flickered and diminished, there was a momentary glow and then its fire was no more. Soon it was cold and dead.

Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting. The preacher glanced at his watch and realized it was time to leave. He slowly stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately it began to glow, once more with the light and warmth of the burning coals around it.

As the preacher reached the door to leave, his host said with a tear running down his cheek, "Thank you so much for your visit and especially for the firey sermon. I will be back in church next Sunday!"

We live in a world today, which tries to say too much with too little. Consequently, few listen. Sometimes the best sermons are the ones left unspoken.

SAYINGS – 2

Don't let your worries get the best of you, remember, Moses started out as a basket case"

Some people are kind, polite, and sweet-spirited - until you try to sit in their pews.

Many folks want to serve God, but only as advisers

It is easier to preach ten sermons than it is to live one.
The good Lord didn't create anything without a purpose, but mosquitoes come close.

When you get to your wit's end, you'll find God lives there.

People are funny, they want the front of the bus, the middle of the road, and the back of the church.

Opportunity may knock once, but temptation bangs on your front door forever.

Quit griping about your church; if it was perfect, you couldn't belong.

If the church wants a better pastor, it only needs to pray for the one it has.

God Himself does not propose to judge a man until he is dead.  So why should you?

Some minds are like concrete, thoroughly mixed up and permanently set.

Peace starts with a smile.

I don't know why some people change churches; what difference does it make which one you stay home from?

A lot of church members who are singing "Standing on the Promises" are just sitting on the premises.

We were called to be witnesses, not lawyers or judges.
Be ye fishers of men.  You catch them - He'll clean them.
Coincidence is when God chooses to remain anonymous.

Don't put a question mark where God put a period.

Don't wait for 6 strong men to take you to church.

Forbidden fruits create many jams.

God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called.

God grades on the cross, not the curve.

God loves everyone, but probably prefers "fruits of the spirit" over "religious nuts!"

God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage.

He who angers you, controls you!

If God is your Copilot - swap seats!

Prayer: Don't give God instructions -- just report for duty!

The task ahead of us is never as great as the Power behind us.

The Will of God will never take you to where the Grace of God will not protect you.

We don't change the message, the message changes us.

You can tell how big a person is by what it takes to ... discourage him.

The best mathematical equation I have ever seen: 1 cross + 3 nails = 4 given.
We are responsible for the effort, not the outcome.

We set the sail; God makes the wind.

When God says "no", it's because He has something better in store for you.

What you are is God's Gift to you.  What you become is your gift to God.

"Father, bless the person reading this in whatever it is that You know they need"

Russian Christmas Story

In the "New Covenant" made by our Creator God with humanity, as reported in Jeremiah 31:31-34, every human being can know God from within - because the Holy Spirit is revealing our Creator to all who are willing to know the Lord and trust in Him. We can still help each other along the way; so may you be pleased to find here a variety of helps to the life of faith in God through Jesus Christ. G.S.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Russian Christmas Story

In 1994, two Americans answered an invitation from the Russian Department of Education to teach morals and ethics based on biblical principles in the public schools.  They were invited to teach at prisons, businesses, the fire and police departments and a large orphanage.  About 100 boys and girls who had been abandoned, abused, and left in the care of a government-run program were in the orphanage.  They relate the following story in their own words:

“It was nearing the holiday season, 1994, time for our orphans to hear, for the first time, the traditional story of Christmas.  We told them about Mary and Joseph arriving in Bethlehem.  Finding no room in the inn, the couple went to a stable, where the baby Jesus was born and placed in a manger.  Throughout the story, the children and orphanage staff sat in amazement as they listened.  Some sat on the edges of their stools, trying to grasp every word.

Completing the story, we gave the children three small pieces of cardboard to make a crude manger.  Each child was given a small paper square, cut from yellow napkins I had brought with me.  No colored paper was available in the city.  Following instructions, the children tore the paper and carefully laid strips in the manger for straw.  Small squares of flannel, cut from a worn-out nightgown an American lady was throwing away as she left Russia, were used for the baby's blanket.  A doll-like baby was cut from tan felt we had brought from the United States.  The orphans were busy assembling their manger as I walked among them to see if they needed any help.

All went well until I got to one table where little Misha sat.  He looked to be about 6 years old and had finished his project.  As I looked at the little boy's manger, I was startled to see not one, but two babies in the manger. Quickly, I called for the translator to ask the lad why there were two babies in the manger.  Crossing his arms in front of him and looking at this completed manger scene, the child began to repeat the story very seriously.  For such a young boy, who had only heard the Christmas story once, he related the happenings accurately until he came to the part where Mary put the baby Jesus in the manger.

Then Misha started to ad-lib. He made up his own ending to the story as he said, "And when Maria laid the baby in the manger, Jesus looked at me and asked me if I had a place to stay.  I told him I have no mamma and I have no papa, so I don't have any place to stay.  Then, Jesus told me I could stay with him.  But I told him I couldn't, because I didn't have a gift to give him like everybody else did."  But I wanted to stay with Jesus so much, so I thought about what I had that maybe I could use for a gift.  I thought maybe if I kept him warm, that would be a good gift.

So I asked Jesus, "If I keep you warm, will that be a good enough gift?"  And Jesus told me, "If you keep me warm, that will be the best gift anybody ever gave me."  "So I got into the manger, and then Jesus looked at me and he told me I could stay with him - for always."  As little Misha finished his story, his eyes brimmed full of tears that splashed down his little cheeks.  Putting his hand over his face, his head dropped to the table and his shoulders shook as he sobbed and sobbed.  The little orphan had found someone who would never abandon nor abuse him, someone who would stay with him - FOR ALWAYS.

I've learned that it's not WHAT you have in your life, but WHOM you have in your life that counts.  It's not WHAT you are doing, but WHOM you are doing it with.  "God is able to do far more than we would dare to ask or even dream of - infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes."

May the Lord welcome you into his manger so that you might keep him warm too. It works two ways, you know, he keeps you warm in your faith by his Holy Spirit. Have a warm and blessed Christmas.

Fr. Joe Lutz, Madonna House Associate
