Letter to Engaged Couples

In the "New Covenant" made by our Creator God with humanity (Jeremiah 31:31-34) every person can know God from within - because the Holy Spirit is revealing our Creator to all who are willing to know the Lord and trust in Him. We can still help each other along the way; so may you be pleased to find here a variety of helps to the life of faith in God through Jesus Christ. G.S.

  « From This Day Forward…. »

 Dear Engaged Couples, Congratulations!

With joy you anticipate a happy future in married and family life and are now exploring concerns you have about that same future as you prepare not only for your wedding day, but also for the many thousands of days that will follow the wedding in the greatest human adventure of all….

Matrimony – the “burden of the mother” – opens up a life of community and love in which the man / husband is called the bridegroom because he gladly accepts to be the “groom” or the one who takes onto himself the “burden of the father” in caring for his wife and mother of the children they hope to bring into the world so that together they can prepare them for the great adventure of life.

Any sane person would pause before making such a mutual commitment, considering all the evils troubling nature and humanity worldwide. You have already accumulated a rich experience of life between you as you develop into a team, but you can find daunting the pressures and challenges of survival, work/career/business, extended family/each other’s family, personal interests, health / exercise/nutrition, prayer/meditation/reading/study, balance & serenity, and so on. At times human beings can and do feel quite alone and small in the face of the intensity of life, work, & society.

We are delighted to share with you good news! God never intended for us to be alone or to suffer under the crushing weight of the world on our shoulders. From the beginning God the Creator offers friendship to women and men, and you will find this theme running through the whole Bible. How do we make friends with a God who likes to “play hide and seek” and who is invisible and often silent?

At Christmas every year we celebrate with joy the great event of the coming of the Son of God among us as a human being, fully sharing in our human life. In the images above you see Jesus chatting with a Samaritan woman at the well of Jacob, an artist’s conception of Jesus now risen from the dead caring for humanity and weeping over our sufferings and loneliness, and finally, the famous image of Jesus who quietly knocks at the door of our heart to see whether we might accept friendship with Him.

We are endowed by the Creator with free will because true friendship can only develop in freedom, and authentic love can never be taken but only freely given. Jesus brings God to us on the inside. Be not afraid to explore your “interior landscape”… reading the Bible, listening in silence, praying….
