Indiana Jones' "Last Crusade" 👉 an analogy of the Christian life

In the "New Covenant" made by our Creator God with humanity (Jeremiah 31:31-34) every person can know God from within - because the Holy Spirit is revealing our Creator to all who are willing to know the Lord and trust in Him. We can still help each other along the way; so may you be pleased to find here a variety of helps to the life of faith in God through Jesus Christ. G.S.

"Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade"

In "The Last Crusade" anthropology professor / adventurer Indiana Jones enters with his companions into the "Temple of the Sun" and must then successfully meet 3 challenges or die on the way into the chamber containing the Holy Grail. While this is a fictional adventure drama, the authors have borrowed elements that are true to life.
Here are the challenges

1.     The Breath of God - "Only the penitent man will pass." The object of the first challenge was to kneel before the breath of God. At the start, a person would feel the wind (the Breath) blow through the chamber's thick cobwebs. He would then have to kneel quickly in order to avoid being decapitated by two huge circular saws.

2.     The Word of God - "Only in the footsteps of God will he proceed." The second challenge had a series of lettered tiles on the floor. The object was to figure out and step on the correct spelling to the Word. The answer was Jehovah, but was to be spelled in Latin as "Iehova". Incorrect tiles would break through, causing the seeker to plunge into a deep chasm below the floor.

3.     The Path of God - "Only in the leap from the lion's head will he prove his worth." In the last of the challenges, the person must take a "leap of faith" from a sculpture of a lion's head across a huge canyon, when in reality there is a hidden path that is painted to look like the depth of the canyon. The object was for the person to believe they can cross whether or not they can see the path.

In Henry Jones' Grail diary, he abbreviated the three challenges in Latin as "The Pendulum," "The Cobbles," and "The Invisible Bridge." Although credited as having only three challenges to get to the Grail, the final one was, according to the Grail Knight, to "choose wisely" among a set of many cups, plates, and bowls to drink spring water out of. Finding the true Grail brought eternal life, which lasted until crossing the Great Seal, the price for immortality. The one who found the Grail was expected to use their eternal life to guard and protect the Grail. Choosing a false Grail and drinking from it would cause instant death.

Let us see now how these dramatic images actually apply to life and the journey to God. The reason there are so many different religions and "paths" to God - even many "versions" of God - is that God chooses to remain mysterious. This is also why so many people find connecting with God difficult. This is not because God is playing "hard to get", but it is due in large part to our inclination to approach life on our own terms with attitudes ranging from apathy or superiority to arrogance and contempt for others and for God. While the strong may succeed in imposing their will on the weak; God loves us too much to allow us to harm ourselves by trying to impose our will on Him, the flawed on the perfect.

Jesus revealed that God is actually a Holy Trinity of divine Persons: the Father, the Son (the God-Man Jesus) and the Holy Spirit: together they are a perfect and eternal community of life and love, respect and harmony. We would do ourselves great harm in trying to approach God with an attitude of superiority or control; so God remains inaccessible to such approaches. The only way we can successfully approach God is to allow the Holy Spirit to lead us into the proper humble attitudes and receptive dispositions for opening ourselves to join in this perfect communion of persons which is God.

1.     The "Breath of God- the Hebrew word for spirit "ruah" even sounds like wind and breath. The three divine Persons are spirit, not flesh, with the exception of the human flesh or nature the Son took from Mary. The Holy Spirit conceived the Son in Mary's womb and the Son came to be known as the man Jesus, son of Mary and also Son of God. John in his Gospel, chapter 3, records Jesus' conversation with Nicodemus, an elder of Israel, in which He explains that God remains mysterious like the wind but very real. The 3 divine Persons are autonomous from us and act in accord with their own perfect will. The only option we have if we wish to approach God is with an attitude of humility or penitence, which is symbolized in kneeling as an expression of authentic openness and receptivity.

2.     The "Word of God- In his Gospel Prologue, John expresses the faith of the apostles and disciples in seeing Jesus as the eternal Son of God, the divine Word spoken by the Father Creator from the beginning of time. This eternal Word became flesh because God wanted to get closer to humanity by becoming one of us. The only true path to come to know God in his true nature as Holy Trinity is by experiencing his love through Jesus of Nazareth. The holy Name of God is his life-giving Word to us, Jesus. The Father calls us to heed Jesus, his Word, obey his commands, and follow in his footsteps. This is what it means to be a disciple, one who follows in the steps of the master and becomes like the master.

3.     The "Path of God- For human beings to trust in the "Breath of God" and to listen to the "Word of God" and follow in his steps is very demanding of our mortal human nature. We are so insecure that we cling to our illusions of control. We don't let go of the desire for control very easily. To put our trust in anyone we need to let go of our fears and impulse to seize power. We do that every time we get in an airplane, on a train, bus, or ship, and being in the company of others doing the same thing helps. When it comes to trusting in God we hesitate because of God's mysterious divine nature; yet Christians find great support in one another's company on the journey of faith. It's easier to make the "leap of faith" together.

We offer this web page to all people of good will who seek an authentic, personal relationship with God our Creator. As we journey together we will make good use of various practices which have proven essential for this journey of faith. We are called, each in our own way, to develop a personal "Rule of Life" to help us "sync" with God. These are elements and disciplines of living that enable us to live our whole life in the Presence of God by accepting to be drawn into the life, love, and communion of the Most Holy Trinity, where alone is to be found truth and goodness, beauty and light, justice and mercy, unity and harmony, and that authentic life which is lasting peace.

Letter to Engaged Couples

In the "New Covenant" made by our Creator God with humanity (Jeremiah 31:31-34) every person can know God from within - because the Holy Spirit is revealing our Creator to all who are willing to know the Lord and trust in Him. ----------------------------------------------------------------

  « From This Day Forward…. »

 Dear Engaged Couples, Congratulations!

With joy you anticipate a happy future in married and family life and are now exploring concerns you have about that same future as you prepare not only for your wedding day, but also for the many thousands of days that will follow the wedding in the greatest human adventure of all….

Matrimony – the “burden of the mother” – opens up a life of community and love in which the man / husband is called the bridegroom because he gladly accepts to be the “groom” or the one who takes onto himself the “burden of the father” in caring for his wife and mother of the children they hope to bring into the world so that together they can prepare them for the great adventure of life.

Any sane person would pause before making such a mutual commitment, considering all the evils troubling nature and humanity worldwide. You have already accumulated a rich experience of life between you as you develop into a team, but you can find daunting the pressures and challenges of survival, work/career/business, extended family/each other’s family, personal interests, health / exercise/nutrition, prayer/meditation/reading/study, balance & serenity, and so on. At times human beings can and do feel quite alone and small in the face of the intensity of life, work, & society.

We are delighted to share with you good news! God never intended for us to be alone or to suffer under the crushing weight of the world on our shoulders. From the beginning God the Creator offers friendship to women and men, and you will find this theme running through the whole Bible. How do we make friends with a God who likes to “play hide and seek” and who is invisible and often silent?

At Christmas every year we celebrate with joy the great event of the coming of the Son of God among us as a human being, fully sharing in our human life. In the images above you see Jesus chatting with a Samaritan woman at the well of Jacob, an artist’s conception of Jesus now risen from the dead caring for humanity and weeping over our sufferings and loneliness, and finally, the famous image of Jesus who quietly knocks at the door of our heart to see whether we might accept friendship with Him.

We are endowed by the Creator with free will because true friendship can only develop in freedom, and authentic love can never be taken but only freely given. Jesus brings God to us on the inside. Be not afraid to explore your “interior landscape”… reading the Bible, listening in silence, praying….

What is the best edition of the Bible for Catholics? Short answer: There isn’t just one because none are perfect. The best approach is to have more than one different translation, even in a language other than English, and to compare the different versions of the same text in order to get a richer understanding of the meaning.

SIMPLE APPROACH TO READING THE BIBLE

How can we best read the Bible, the Word of God? Short answer: The Holy Spirit who inspired the original people who wrote the various texts is with us now to inspire us to “hear” God speak to us personally. Here are a few steps that will help you enter into a personal relationship of “listening” to God.

1.      Begin with a prayer asking the Holy Spirit to be with you to enlighten your mind and open your heart.

2.      WHAT? To understand “what” the Word says, it helps to read introductions to each book, notes at the bottom, and Bible commentaries. This “study” is different from reading the Word of God “prayerfully” but is a good step to better understand what was happening at the time God inspired the Bible writer.

3.      SO WHAT? Once we have an idea of what God was saying the first time, we can begin to wonder that that Word of God has to do with us, with me, now. This is where commentaries and homilies help.

4.      WHAT NOW? Once we begin to see the significance of what God said back then and what light God is shedding on our situation now; then we can begin to discern what God is saying to us, to me, now.

5.      HOW MUCH IS UP TO EACH OF US NOW? We are all under the obligation of obedience – as Jesus was obedient (listening and then doing) to the Father’s will – which also involves keeping the commandments, especially Jesus’ commandment to love our enemies and love one another as He loves us. Beyond that, we have a lot of freedom to discern what more the Lord is asking of us out of love.

6.      Always close with a prayer of thanksgiving to the Holy Spirit for enlightening and guiding us.

Why are there Catholic Bibles and Protestant Bibles? Isn’t the Word of God one?

The earliest Jewish Scriptures trace back old oral traditions, and then to Moses after the Exodus which Scripture scholars and historians long placed around 1250 B.C.; to King David ca 1000 B.C., and subsequently to his son Solomon; both of whom composed a number of the Psalms which were originally set to music for singing.

After the Exodus, Moses and his collaborators and helpers developed the first five books of the Bible, called “The Torah” or “The Law” by Jews. Subsequently some of the historical books were written as well as some of the books by the prophets. There was a concentration of inspiration and writing before, during, and after the Babylonian Exile and Captivity which happened roughly between 597 and 538 B.C. and subsequently included rebuilding and rededicating the Temple. This caused a new edition of the Sacred Scriptures over a century or so.

Subsequently there were a few more prophets and a lot of spiritual writing. In the few centuries before Jesus there developed a Jewish population of Greek language and culture in Egypt around Alexandria, and some of them composed some new Scriptures in their Greek language. For a time these works were welcomed into the Jewish religious culture even in Palestine / Israel and Judah.

By Jesus’ time the official list of inspired books in the Jewish Scriptures was fairly settled. However, as Jesus’ disciples made extensive use of the Jewish Scriptures, having been taught by Jesus how to trace the many prophecies about the coming Messiah and how Jesus had fulfilled them all; things began to change.

Many of the Scriptures originally composed in Greek, such as The Book of Wisdom, seemed given by God to prepare the way more intensively for the coming of his Son into the world. As a result, when the majority of the Jewish population rejected Jesus and the developing Christian faith, the Greek Scriptures fell out of favor. By coincidence corresponding to the three centuries of Roman persecution of Christians and often also of Jews, the Jewish religious leaders came to exclude those Greek Scriptures from their official list of the Word of God.

At the Council of Rome in 382 under the scholarship of Saint Jerome, the Catholic list or Canon of the Sacred Scriptures was set as it remains to this day. The Council commissioned Saint Jerome to translate the Bible into the current language of the people, which was Latin. This translation was called the Vulgate.

In the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century, Martin Luther and most other Reformers rejected this Catholic Canon of Scriptures and opted for the Jewish list or Canon. They therefore eliminated the books that had been originally composed in Greek rather than in Hebrew in and around Alexandria in the centuries before Jesus.

To this day, this remains the main difference between Catholic and Protestant Bibles. Orthodox Bibles have a few different lists but they most resemble the Catholic Canon. Here are the books included in Catholic Bibles but which Protestant Bibles exclude or include in a separate section called Apocrypha or Other Writings.

Tobit – Judith – 1st Book of Maccabees – 2nd Book of Maccabees – The Book of Wisdom – Ecclesiasticus also known as Ben Sira – Baruch

Protestant Bibles: O.T. – 39 + 27 N.T. = 66 books in all

Catholic Bibles: O.T. – 46 + 27 N.T. = 73 books in all

PRAYERS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT FOR PONDERING THE WORD OF GOD

(In Saint Joseph “New Catholic Edition” of the HOLY BIBLE – Confraternity Edition, a Revision of the Challoner-Rheims Version Edited by Catholic Scholars under the Patronage of the Episcopal Committee of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine – Catholic Book Publishing Company, New York, 1962.

Before reading the Holy Scriptures

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love.

℣. Send forth Thy spirit and they shall be created.

Ʀ . And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

Let Us Pray.

O God, Who didst instruct the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit; grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things and ever to rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

After reading the Holy Scriptures

(Prayer of St. Bede the Venerable)

Let me not, O Lord, be puffed up with worldly wisdom, which passes away, but grant me that love which never abates, that I may not choose to know anything among men but Jesus, and Him crucified. (1 Cor. 13:8; 2:2.)

I pray Thee, loving Jesus, that as Thou hast graciously given me to drink in with delight the words of Thy knowledge, so Thou wouldst mercifully grant me to attain one day to Thee, the Fountain of all Wisdom and to appear forever before They face. Amen.

Opening Prayer at the Second Vatican Council – 1962

(By Pope John XXIII)

We stand before you, Holy Spirit, conscious of our sinfulness, but aware that we gather in your name. Come to us, remain with us, and enlighten our hearts. Give us light and strength to know your will, to make it our own, and to live it in our lives. Guide us by your wisdom, support us by your power, for you are God, sharing the glory of Father and Son. You desire justice for all: enable us to uphold the rights of others; do not allow us to be misled by ignorance or corrupted by fear or favour. Unite us to yourself in the bond of love and keep us faithful to all that is true. As we gather in your name may we temper justice with love, so that all our decisions may be pleasing to you, and earn the reward promised to good and faithful servants. You live and reign with the Father and the Son, One God, forever and ever. Amen

Saint Pope John XXIII, pray for us.
